About Us
Carter Harps Australia
Carter Harps Australia is a 30 plus-year old business which had its beginnings after taking over the late Peter Kempster lever harp business (Kempster Instruments est. 1967). Peter Kempster was one of the country’s first lever harp maker and was based in South Australia. This gave many Australian harpist the opportunity to purchase and learn the harp at a reasonable cost.
The business changed hands after Peter Kempster’s sudden passing and was taken over by Stephen Carter former principal flautist of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. After Stephens retirement in 2019 the business is now managed by his daughter Suneetha Carter.
Carter Harps started distributing the Camac range around 1999. We are dealers for both Australia and New Zealand.
As well as distribution of the full Camac range, Carter Harps has always offered a comprehensive one stop shop for all Harp products throughout Australia. We sell strings, accessories and parts for all harps makes and models.
Meet the person behind the harp
About Suneetha
Suneetha is a harpist who began her studies at the age of eight with Kerry Ingram. For the next 14 years she studied with former principal harpist of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Rosemary St John.
In 2003 she completed her Bachelor of Music in performance at the University of Toronto Canada. This was with Judy Loman former principal harpist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra .
Her experience is diverse ranging from solo, orchestral, opera, chamber ensemble, television, and musical theatre productions in Australia, Canada and the USA. She does freelance work and private harp tuition regularly. She is now manager and owner of Carter Harps Australia.
She also has a Bachelor of Nursing from the University Of South Australia graduating in 1996. As a nurse she had the opportunity to work in Australia, India, Canada and the USA.
A previous life saw her coaching swimmers and working as a trainer in the gym.
Currently all her work time is dedicated to the music industry with a focus in promoting all aspects of the harp.
